Our History

Our History

In 1940 Richard Hungerford began providing funerals for families in a Bedell St. home in Freeport, NY. During this time it was common practice for funeral directors to host wakes and memorial services in the home of the deceased. Mr. Hungerford recognized the need to assist families in their grieving process in a facility specifically designed for this purpose. Through his dedication to the families he served, the Bedell Street funeral home soon exceeded its location and Hungerford Mortuary needed to move to a larger facility.

The following year, Mr. Hungerford purchased one of Freeport’s oldest colonial homes on the corner of Pine Street and Ocean Avenue, where it is still located today. The original building dates back to 1903 and much of the funeral home’s original facade has been maintained to reflect the heritage of both the building and the surrounding area.

In 1960, C. James Clark, a long time employee of Hungerford Mortuary, purchased the business from Mr. Hungerford. It was at this time that the funeral home on Pine Street became known by its current title, Hungerford and Clark Funeral Home. Mr. Clark and his staff provided personalized service and support to grieving families until his retirement in 1988.

Kevin Molese and Jerry Frayler began their funeral service under the direction of Mr. Clark.  Although the funeral home was housed in a large facility, it once again was necessary to expand. In 1996, the two directors renovated the funeral home by building a large addition which consisted of two large chapels, handicap facilities, a new main entrance and foyer. It was very important to them to build this addition while still maintaining the buildings beauty and stately charm. Hungerford and Clark has two of the largest chapels in the surrounding area.

Hungerford and Clark Funeral Home has been working with families since 1940 to provide quality and compassionate service during times of grief and loss. Although much has changed in funeral service since Mr. Hungerford’s tenure, the commitment of Hungerford and Clark Funeral Home remains the same, and that is providing personalized funeral service with care and compassion while maintaining a high standard of excellence.

In November of 2021  Kevin Molese and Jerry Frayler decided to retire after 35 years of dedicated and proud service to the Freeport and surrounding communities. They passed ownership of the Funeral Home  to the Carpinone family who plan on continuing the traditions of the Hungerford & Clark Standard.
