Frances R. Mejias

Frances Rita Mejias (nee George) was born April 2, 1918 in Mayaro, Trinidad and was one of eight children born to Hubert and Louisa George. Frances married Benjamin Kenneth Mejias in 1952 and together they had four children. They immigrated to Brooklyn, NY in 1969 where Frances began her 20 plus year career as a teacher's assistant at Prospect Heights High School. Before she retired, the family moved to Freeport, NY where she and Benjamin enjoyed babysitting their newest granddaughter. On Monday, October 14, 2019 Frances (Rita to those closest to her) went home to the Lord, joining her husband Benjamin and her son Stephen. She leaves behind her 97 year old baby brother, Gregory Reynold George; three daughters, Allyson, Angela and Joanne; her sons-in-law, Chuck and Michael; six grandchildren, Steven, Michael, Ashleigh Rae, William, Kara and Jamie; two great grandchildren, Justyn and Kai; and a host of nieces, nephews and their friends who all called her Grandma Rita. The "grands" lit up her sense of humor, which was always on show when they visited. As a young woman Frances designed and made her own clothes. She also loved to sketch, did beautiful calligraphy and wrote lovely poetry. Faith and love of family was an essential part of her life and she instilled that in her children. She always said family must stay together in love and take care of each other because, "God, He knows". That was the way she lived her life and one of her last requests to us was that we continue to love and support each other. Frances was the glue to the family and we will miss her with each passing day. The glue was strong and she made sure it stuck. Family will receive friends on Friday October 18th from 2 - 4 & 7 - 9 PM. Funeral Mass Saturday October 19th at 9:45AM Queen of the Most Holy Rosary RC Church, W. Centennial Ave., Roosevelt. Cremation Private. In lieu of flower contribution to NYU Langone Center for Alzheimer's and Dementia Research in memory of Frances R. Mejias.
