Amalia Kanaras

Born Amalia Tsimicalis on March 6, 1940 in Skoura, Greece. She married her soulmate, Stelios Kanaras, in 1964 and their lifelong journey took them to Toronto and then Long Island where they raised their children (Trisa and John). Amalia and Stelios built a beautiful life together that included the blessing of six grandchildren and a great grandchild. Amalia lived with boundless love for her family, friends and church. A devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend, she was quick with a smile or a kind word, and took joy in caring for others – especially her family and friends. Her love language was certainly “Acts of Service” and it showed in all her actions. Among her many love-filled actions, were cooking/baking for her family and friends, including her incomparable pizza or moustokouloura. Once she became a grandmother, her acts of love included creating identical dresses for each granddaughter for their annual visit to Santa Claus, and MANY sleepovers with her grandchildren that culminated in crafts and pancake breakfasts. Amalia was an active member of Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church from the Freeport days. She taught Sunday school, was a member of the philoptohos, and tirelessly worked at the church annual bazaar. Amalia will be remembered for her kind words and sage advice to her friends and family. Her golden years were cut short by an aggressive form of Parkinson’s that left her a prisoner within her own body – leaving her unable to speak, swallow, write or walk. However, she found a way to communicate with her loved ones through her beautiful eyes and facial expressions. The pandemic was a silver lining for Amalia and her immediate family as they all rallied to care for her and keep her home, surrounded by the people she loved most. In her final moments, by her side were her family and as her journey came to an end, she took her last breath with each of her children holding her hands and her husband by her side. Amalia is survived by her husband Stelios, her daughter Trisa and son-in -law Paul, son John and daughter-in -law Maria and grandchildren Areti, her husband George, Amalia, Amalia, Andriana, Anastasia, Stelio and her great grandson, Eleftherios. In lieu of flowers, her family is requesting donations be made to St. Demetrios Greek Church in Merrick NY – her spiritual home.
